A South Carolina woman has been brought back to Halifax County to face the
music for a 2012 crime in which she tried to defraud the city of Roanoke Rapids,
police said.
Capt. Andy Jackson, head of investigations for the Roanoke Rapids Police
Department, said on June 5, 2012, City Finance Director MeLinda Hite alerted
police several fraudulent checks had been cashed bearing the city’s account
number in South Carolina.
Nine checks in all were cashed, totaling around $3,232, Jackson said.
Hite and her staff caught the fraud in time, which prevented the city from
losing the money, but the businesses to which the checks were written became
victims.
The checks were written and presented to businesses in Myrtle Beach, Camden,
and Conway, S.C., as well as other locations.
Det. Corey Dixon made the journey to Cayce, S.C. and with the help of
investigators from the Cayce Police Department, a suspect was identified as
Tonya Sampson, 39, of Irmo, S.C.
On June 15, 2012, Cayce police arrested Sampson, Jackson said.
“When they went to arrest her, she climbed out the rear hatch of an SUV and
tried to dispose of a package of unused, fraudulent checks,” Jackson said. “None
of those were ours.”
The checks were forged, bearing the name of a fraudulent business but
carrying account numbers from various entities, including the city, according to
Jackson.
Authorities in South Carolina dealt with Sampson first, and Roanoke Rapids
police picked her up from Cayce Monday, bringing her to Halifax County Detention
Center.
Sampson is charged with nine counts of forgery and counterfeiting. She is
free under $50,000 bond and is due in court July 31.
“Counterfeit check cashing is one of the popular things we see where fraud is
committed,” Jackson said. “People print checks with a different business name
and put somebody else’s account at the bottom of the check.”
